Suddenly there sounded a report like a pistol shot. I jumped up and rushed into the room…. My mother…stammered out “W-w-what’s happened? It was right beside me!” and stared at the table…. The table top had split from the rim to beyond the center, and not along any joint; the split ran right through the solid wood. I was thunderstruck. How could such a thing happen? A table of solid walnut that had dried out for seventy years—how could it split on a summer day in the relatively high degree of humidity characteristic of our climate?43

Two weeks later a similar incident occurred, only this time it was a large bread knife that shattered. The following day, Jung took the knife to a cutler and was told that the only way it could have been broken in such a manner was if someone had done so deliberately.44 Jung kept the knife and later had it mounted.45 In a letter (November 27, 1934) to the well known parapsychologist, J. B. Rhine, Jung claimed that his medium cousin had not been near the house at the time, but that soon after, the séances began. He also added:
